Groveton Sprints Race Recap (May 5, 2019)
CORAOPOLIS, Pa - The Pine-Richland Crew team found success on a quick-moving Ohio River on Sunday (May 5) at the Groveton Sprints. The Rams women’s varsity 8+ crew captured victory on the 1,500 meter course posting a time of 5:10.5. The win came over a Fox Chapel (5:28.9) crew that defeated the Rams the previous week at Pittsburgh Scholastic Sprints. The Rams women’s team also took first in the varsity 4+, second place in the JV 4+, and a third place finish in the novice 4+.
“We had a really strong start and were never really out of the lead,” Pine-Richland senior captain Grace Crankovic said of the Women’s 8+ race. “It wasn’t a perfect race by any means, but we made every stroke count.”
The varsity men opened the day by defeating three North Allegheny crews in the Men’s 4x. The same lineup repeated their effort later in the afternoon in the varsity 4+, defeating Fox Chapel and Mercyhurst Prep.
The morning quickly became a duel with rival Fox Chapel. The Rams and Foxes split victories in the men’s 2x and men’s 4+, both winning one flight each. The novice men also posted their first victory of the season, winning their flight with North Allegheny, Mercyhurst Prep, and Mt. Lebanon by open water.
Pine-Richland heads westward to the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association (MSRA) Championship on Lake Dillon in Zanesville, Ohio Saturday and Sunday (May 11-12).
